Constipation

Nutritional management of constipation through fibre, fluids and a steady eating rhythm.

What it is

Constipation is defined as a condition with reduced frequency of bowel movements (fewer than three per week) and/or difficulty passing stools, presenting as hard or dry stools, intense straining and a sensation of incomplete evacuation.

Symptoms

  • Infrequent or difficult bowel movements
  • Abdominal distension
  • Discomfort
  • A sensation of incomplete evacuation

Nutritional management

  • Small, frequent meals
  • A diet rich in fibre — i.e. 25–30 g/day from wholegrain products, fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts and edible seeds
  • Adequate hydration of at least 2 litres per day
  • Increased physical activity, with at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week

When to consult a dietitian-nutritionist

  • When you experience chronic constipation or irregular bowel function
  • When a personalised nutrition plan is needed, focusing on fibre, fluids and small frequent meals
  • When other risk factors or digestive conditions co-exist (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome)
