Gestational Diabetes

What it is

Any degree of glucose intolerance during pregnancy, resulting in elevated blood-glucose levels.

Symptoms

There are usually no marked symptoms and it is detected through testing; in some cases there may be increased thirst or fatigue.

Nutritional management

  • Distribution of carbohydrates across small, balanced meals
  • Choosing foods with a low glycaemic index
  • Small, frequent meals
  • Avoiding long intervals without food
